Okay, just going to clarify a few things here. First of all, some people have asked me why I don't update this column very often. Well, actually, no people have ever asked me that. Come to think of it, why am I even typing this?
I just thought I'd update this thing to let everyone know that this month long delay is actually my fault. I've finally got the page done and sent off to Adapa, so maybe it'll be up soon. So, for anyone that's been wondering, things should pick up soon. And, checking the traffic numbers, that would be nobody. So, I've apparently single-handedly killed the site. Go, me!
It occurs to me at this point (now that it no longer really matters) that maybe if we updated on a semi-regular basis, we'd be able to retain a reader or two. Problem is that there is no way I can get a Cion page done every week, even without school. So, I was wondering if there was anything else you imaginary guys want to see. It takes me quite a while to do a page of Cion, but it's rare that a week goes by without me drawing -something,- so if there's anything in particular anyone wants to see, let me know. For example, I've got pages of Cion character sketches and so on that I could toss up, as well as some non-Cion sketches sitting around. Before I started Cion, I was toying around with a number of other solo comic ideas that were all shelved in order to speed up work on Cion, but I might be able to toss out one every now and then without slowing down Cion's schedule too much. I was also thinking of doing things like wallpapers or splash pages or something, things which are kind of tangential to Cion but might still interest people coming to the site. Or maybe a sort of "behind the scenes" thing that shows how I do the comic, so that I can get some feedback on the process.
Anyways, if anyone reads this, feel free to drop me a line. I check the forums pretty regularly (even if I don't post), and I've got this newfangled "e-mail" conflagaration working, but I don't check it as often (because I don't actually get any e-mail).
All right, so, I'll try to get something up every Friday from now on. Note that by "Friday" I generally mean "Friday Evening, like real late, so late, in fact, that in some parts of the world it might actually not still be Friday," so if you're not keen on re-checking every couple minutes, you might want to pretend that I said "Saturday" and hopefully, that way, I won't be lying.
Anyway, for this week, I didn't really have a lot of time to do anything new (I had tests EVERY SINGLE DAY this week and a ten page exam to write by next Tuesday that I really ought to start researching the topic for sometime soon), so I just scanned and cropped a few early conceptual sketches of Fern that I had lying around. Since I don't know how to pre-empt the big page-y thing (nor would my character roughs make a very good splash page here), I'll probably stick these smaller weekly updates on their own little page here. Ph34r my m4d HTML sk1llz. I'm trying to come up with something prettier, but it took me all day to get this much done (stop laughing, dammit).
I have heaps of stuff to say, hopefully I won't forget anything. Oh, first thing, if you're not checking the forums, you're missing out on the action! We've been commended on no less than two ( QC, CN ) forums, and we have no one else but you to thank for it, for helping us get our name out there.
Secondly, I'd like to plug a very cool comic, A Lesson is Learned But The Damage is Irreversible, who seem at the moment to be skyrocketing to fame and fortune after a mere eleven strips (don't say anything!), and probably don't need someone else smallscale talking about them, but too bad, I am! Great art, funny as hell pages... quality stuff.
There was a thirdly, I'm sure of it... well, I'll probably remember it by tomorrow morning. Right now it's 2AM, I've been up for 18 hours and the only thing that sounds better than hitting the sack is... there isn't anything. I'd better get to sleep then.
From Wednesday, Sept. 1 to Friday, Sept. 3, terrorists held more than 1000 hostages in a school in Beslan. By the end, 322 people, including 155 children, were killed.
I'm feeling a lot of emotions right now. There's sorrow... and anger, not only at the news services, who use descriptions like "monstrously charred", or people in power who seem to be using this act as an excuse to further their goals, but at myself. It seems that I'm obliged to feel sad when everyone else is, and otherwise I turn it off, like a faucet. But I can't spend every day mourning over the newest, deepest tragedy, which means that by being sad now I'm betraying myself. Is it worse than the children dying every day in empoverished countries? Is it worse because people actively went out and killed these people, rather than just doing it through indifference and apathy? Or is it worse because somebody out there wants it to be worse.
And by saying this, I prove how much better I am than everyone else. I say this, typing it up on my $3000 laptop, wearing my Adidas cap, and making sure my Sanyo CD player is recharging properly. Don't worry; by tomorrow, I will have justified it some way or another, and life will go on. Well, for me, at least.
For those of you who haven't heard about the genocide in Darfur, here are a few links that were given by the artist Matthew Good on his site:
My eyes are being opened, and although I don't like what I'm seeing, I can't look away.
If you have a blog and you're able, tomorrow (Sept. 6), talk about this crisis, and if you can't, just link to those articles, as I've done. Something needs to be done, quickly.
Just so you know, I succumbed to creating an account on livejournal, so you'll probably have to put up with less of my ranting from now on - it's annoying even to me when I look back on it :P
And apologies for my last entry. The issue is important, very much so, but you're not coming here to be bombarded with news about death and suffering - there's plenty of other places to learn about what needs to be fixed in the world (I'll probably put up a permanent link to Matthew Good's blog, since he's pretty politically aware, while I'm known for not being so).
I guess it should be cool to be such a different person each day of the week that you can't understand who you were last Tuesday, but in reality it's just annoying. And part of being a teenager. If you can stand to bear with me, I'll try to be good from now on.
Anyway, I'm going to attempt to get the next text page in the series up on the weekend. Remind me just in case I forget, okay.
It's obviously based on how interesting you are. Since I update a lot, I'm like way up ... here. (does the hand thing, with the high up thing, and stuff)
PS: I'm going to have a serious go at getting the new site design done in this week break off uni. How do you feel about a BCX vote button on the main page? Actually, if anyone has opinions, jump on the forum and let us know. Oh, and minor changes to the dialogue on this page, thanks Zai for the help.
